Approved as MLS’s 28th franchise in August 2019, St. Louis CITY SC made its debut in February 2023 with a 3-2 win over Austin FC. While the club doesn’t yet have a long history, it has made an immediate impact.
In its inaugural season, STL CITY set a record for most wins by an expansion team with 17, finished first in the Western Conference, and earned a spot in the 2024 CONCACAF Champions Cup. The season ended on a sour note, however, with a first-round playoff loss to Sporting Kansas City.
The team experienced turmoil in the following season. Despite kicking off the season on a five-game undefeated streak, the team only won one game. Come July 2024, STL CITY ended up firing head coach Bradley Carnell and replacing him with John Hackworth as interim head coach. That shakeup resulted in the team finishing the season in 12th place in the Western Conference, missing the MLS playoffs.
This season has been off the map, and not in a good way, as St. Louis has struggled to keep up with the rest of the Western Conference, currently sitting at the bottom of the standings.
