There will be as many as nine sportsbooks ready to take wagers online when Missouri sports betting launches on Dec. 1.
On Wednesday, the Missouri Gaming Commission officially conferred temporary sports betting licenses to the following operators:
- bet365
- BetMGM
- Caesars Sportsbook
- Circa Sports
- DraftKings
- ESPN BET
- Fanatics Sportsbook
- FanDuel
- Underdog Sports
Provided those licensees fulfill other requirements, such as having their internal controls and house rules approved by the MGC, they will be able to start taking bets as early as midnight on Dec. 1. They also may accept registrations and deposits from bettors starting on Nov. 17.
Seven Partner With Missouri Teams, Casinos
Wednesday’s news comes more than two months after the commission awarded two untethered licenses to DraftKings and Circa Sports. Those exclusive licenses were part of the constitutional amendment voters passed last November legalizing sports betting. Besides those two licenses, the amendment gave other operators a chance to enter the market if they established a partnership with an in-state casino or sports franchise.
PENN Entertainment, which runs ESPN BET, operates two casinos in the state, as does Caesars. Fanatics Sportsbook partnered with Boyd Gaming, which also manages a pair of casinos. BetMGM signed an agreement with Century Casinos.
Underdog Sports signed its market-access deal with the Kansas City Royals, while bet365’s pact is with the St. Louis Cardinals.
MO Sports Betting Follows Pattern Other Recent States Set
Not all of the now 39 states that have legalized sports betting have followed the same path since the US Supreme Court opened the door for them to regulate wagering thanks to the landmark 2018 decision that overturned PASPA. However, over the years, the market has narrowed after several US operators have pulled up their stakes.
Take, for example, Iowa, which legalized sports betting in 2019. By 2021, state regulators approved 18 sports betting operators to take wagers. However, the state currently has 11 active sportsbooks.
Missouri’s list of approved operators is very similar to Kentucky’s and North Carolina’s –two states that have launched statewide mobile sports betting within the past two years. Both of those states have bet365, BetMGM, Caesars, DraftKings, ESPN, Fanatics and FanDuel. Kentucky also has licensed Circa, while Underdog is also available in North Carolina.
