The first day of Missouri sports betting was indeed a big one as patrons from across the state came out in full force on Monday.
We don’t know how much was wagered, but betting interest was high, according to data that GeoComply released on Tuesday. GeoComply provides geolocation and other compliance solutions for leading online sports betting operators, such as the ones now live in Missouri.
188K New Accounts Set Up Before Launch
According to GeoComply, Missourians created roughly 188,000 new accounts in the two-week lead-up to Monday’s launch. The Missouri Gaming Commission allowed operators to let customers register during that advanced window, ensuring a smoother launch with newly operational Missouri sportsbook apps.
“We are pleased that Missourians are now able to place wagers on sporting events,” Commission Chair Jan Zimmerman said in a statement. “Sports wagering will create new jobs, increase tax revenue, and further enhance education in our great state. I am incredibly proud of the MGC staff for their hard work and dedication in getting sports wagering to the finish line.”
In addition, GeoComply found that more than 250,000 sports betting accounts, from operators such as DraftKings and FanDuel, were active in the Show-Me State on Monday. The difference in numbers is because many Missouri sports bettors already had set up accounts in nearby states, such as Illinois and Kansas. Most sports betting operators have established single apps that work in each state where they’re licensed.
From those 250,000-plus accounts, GeoComply identified more than 2.6 million geolocation checks. A geolocation check does not equal a betting attempt, but GeoComply and other companies that perform similar work for sports betting apps conduct periodic checks to ensure customers are using the app in a state where the operator is licensed.
“What we’ve seen in the first 24 hours is remarkable,” GeoComply CEO Kip Levin said in a statement. “Tens of thousands of Missourians immediately joined safe, regulated platforms the moment they became legal. It’s a powerful reminder of how quickly consumers embrace a well-regulated market when the option finally exists."
Big Missouri Numbers Likely This Weekend
GeoComply said it would release additional data for the first full week of sports betting. That report would include betting data pertaining to the Kansas City Chiefs home game Sunday night against the Houston Texans.
The Chiefs, who have reached the Super Bowl in five of the previous six seasons and won it three times, are currently on track to miss the playoffs for the first time since 2014. Despite that, they’re still priced at +1800 with DraftKings Missouri Sportsbook to win the big game this season, a sign that many bettors still believe in Patrick Mahomes’ team and that the 2025 NFL campaign is wide open.
BetMissouri.com has estimated the first 12 months of legal sports betting in the state will generate a handle of nearly $3.9 billion, with about 14% of adults surveyed saying they plan to make at least one bet a week. BetMissouri.com, which includes reviews of Missouri betting promo codes for licensed sportsbooks, estimates that the state will receive about $48.5 million in taxes from sports betting in Year 1, with most of that going toward education in the state.
