May is a big month for Missouri sports betting.

The Missouri Gaming Commission (MGC) delivered its proposed rules for sports gambling to Gov. Mike Kehoe’s office on Wednesday, April 23 after their mandatory 30-day public input period came and went with no public comments recorded.

After the governor’s office weighs in (which may include possible recommendations or changes), the rules are expected to be approved at the next monthly MGC meeting, which will be held on Wednesday, May 28.

13 days earlier, sports wagering license applications will be available on the MGC website on Thursday, May 15th.

License Applications Go Live May 15

In their latest sports wagering update, the commission said it intends to work with our stakeholders to make license applications available on May 15 so that interested parties can start the process of gathering the necessary documents to complete their applications.

The licensing rules are scheduled to become effective on Saturday, August 30, so the interim period from May 15 to Aug. 30 will help ensure that the commission has time to properly review applications before decisions are made and temporary licenses are issued.

With this timeline, sports wagering will go live by the constitutionally required start date of Monday, Dec. 1.

Who Can Apply for Licenses?

Amendment 2, the state’s sports betting law, allocates six sportsbook licenses each for Missouri’s six casino licensees: Affinity Gaming, Bally’s Corporation, Boyd Gaming, Caesars Entertainment, Century Casinos, PENN Entertainment and professional sports teams - Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas City Royals, Kansas City Current, St. Louis Blues, St. Louis Cardinals, and St. Louis City SC.

There will also be two “untethered” licenses, which won’t have a retail partner.

Several sportsbooks have partnerships with casino operators in the state while others already have team partnerships, such as BetMGM Missouri with the Kansas City Chiefs.
