Mental health and addiction treatment providers across the Kansas City metro are expanding problem gambling services as Missouri sports betting continues to grow and the 2026 FIFA World Cup approaches.
Industry officials say the combination of increased betting access and a major international sports event is driving preparation efforts.
More than a month has passed since online sports betting became available in Missouri. Health professionals say demand for gambling-related support is expected to rise as betting exposure increases across the state.
Problem Gambling Risk Shows Sharp Increase
According to the 2025 Kansas Gambling Survey, the percentage of people considered at risk for problem gambling rose to 20%, five times higher than in 2017. While the data reflects the broader Kansas City region, Missouri-based providers report using the findings to guide staffing, outreach, and treatment capacity planning.
Counseling organizations serving the Kansas City metro area have begun scaling resources to meet anticipated demand tied to expanded sports wagering access and major sporting events.
World Cup Matches Expected to Drive Betting Activity
Kansas City will host six matches during the 2026 FIFA World Cup at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium between June 16 and July 11, 2026. The schedule includes four group-stage matches, a Round of 32 match on July 3, and a quarterfinal on July 11.
FIFA has also announced partnerships with Missouri sports betting apps that allow licensed operators to stream matches, increasing exposure to wagering content during the tournament.
Missouri-based addiction specialists say the combination of live streaming access and local match hosting is expected to increase betting participation. Providers across Missouri continue coordinating with regional partners to prepare for higher call volumes, treatment inquiries, and educational outreach related to responsible gambling ahead of the tournament.
